KAZUSHI ONO conductor

Kazushi Ono is in his fourth season as Music Director of La Monnaie, the Royal Opera House of Belgium, having succeeded Antonio Pappano in August 2002. This season started with a very successful Japan tour, with Don Giovanni and two symphonic programmes, and his productions at La Monnaie this season include The Flying Dutchman, Boris Godunov and Falstaff.  During previous seasons he conducted new productions of Elektra, I Due Foscari, Don Giovanni, Tannhauser and Die Frau Ohne Schatten, and world premieres of Ballata by Francesconi, Julie by Philippe Boesmans and, at the Aix en Provence festival, Hanjo by Hosakawa.

This appointment follows Kazushi Ono’s 6-year tenure as General Music Director of Baden State Opera, Karlsruhe and his position as Principal Conductor of Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra where he is now Conductor Laureate.

Mr. Ono guest conducts many orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, NDR Hamburg, Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, RAI di Torino, City of Birmingham Symphony Kazushi Ono conductingOrchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France on tour and in Paris, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein.  He recently made his debut at La Scala Milan, opening their season with 3 performances of Mahler Symphony No 7, and will make his operatic debut there next season.

Mr. Ono devotes much time to contemporary music, promoting the works of many composers including Messiaen, Ligeti, Rhim, Sciarrino, Gubaidulina, Schnittke, Takemitsu, Adams and Hosokawa, and last season he conducted Henze’s The Bassarids at Chatelet.

His discography with the Orchestra of La Monnaie includes Mahler Symphony No 2 and works by Turnage, Rihm and Benjamin for Warner Classics, the complete Prokofiev Piano Concerti with El Basha and Julie by Boesmans.
